Dermatology

Comprehensive Summary

The World Health Organization (WHO) recently launched its Skin NTDs App, built to recognize and classify skin diseases through artificial intelligence (AI) and to assist with diagnostic recommendations. In line with the WHO’s goal to investigate neglected tropical diseases (NTDs), the release of the Skin NTDs App will advance the dermatological diagnosis scene. The study, based in Senegal, will analyze how effectively the AI algorithm performs in skin lesion diagnosis, both quantitatively and qualitatively. Through data collection and interviews, accuracy, precision, and participant feedback will be measured to identify the performance quality of the app. The results of this study will be available near the end of 2025, as data will continue to be collected until September 2025.

Outcomes and Implications

With the assistance of the Skin NTDs App, classification and diagnosis of skin issues and lesions can be expedited, relieving medical professionals of some strain as instances of skin cancer rise. Furthermore, the app can be useful in areas of Senegal with little to no access to dermatological care. As the app is in its beta testing phase, it may be implemented for clinical use in the coming months, once the results are published.
