Psychiatry

Comprehensive Summary

This study by Chubinidze et al. uses AI-generated images as a way to help adults with alexithymia as a result of anorexia nervosa (AN) to better express emotions. The two participants were outpatients with restrictive AN undergoing therapy. The researchers asked particpants to described emotionally challenging experiences with sensory language such as colours, shapes, and textures. These descriptions were then put into an AI image generator, and from the resulting images, participants selected which they resonated with the most and why. The researchers found that the images evoked felt responses and sharpened participants’ descriptions of their emotions. Furthermore, participants were found to have improved in their differentiation between emotional states throughout the image selection and reflection process. The study shows that combining AI-generated images with therapeutic reflection can help those with AN to better articulate their emotions, as well as support a co-creative process that allows patients to feel a sense of self-agency. The authors do note that this study has many limitations such as its small and undiverse sample size, preventing it from being generalizable to a large population.

Outcomes and Implications

This study introduces a novel method to help AN patients with alexithymia, a group of people who generally struggle with traditional talk therapy as it is reliant on accurate emotional articulation. Using AI-image generators as a supplement with existing therapies can allow for better tailored therapy. It can also potentially improve therapeutic outcomes by helping clients to gain emotional insight earlier. Furthermore, there is broader potential within this study as the image-generating method could benefit other populations with difficulty communicating emotion, such as those with autism.
