Public Health

Comprehensive Summary

This study, presented by Charles E. Basch and Corey H. Basch, examines how the growing presence of digital information environments and artificial intelligence (AI) impact population health through examining patterns of exposure and subsequently recommending solutions. After emphasizing the broad range of influences that AI currently has on different sectors from education to criminal justice, the authors proceed to review existing literature and broader trends in digital communication to highlight how AI-driven information ecosystems shape health outcomes. Ultimately, the authors found that while AI provides new opportunities for important processes such as health promotion and early disease detection, AI nevertheless raises key risks. Specifically, since the most viewed health communications online are brief in nature and uploaded by consumers, it is difficult to ensure accurate educational outreach and communications about complex health topics, thereby hindering effective care and health promotion. Therefore, the authors argue that it is essential to develop surveillance infrastructure that continuously monitors digital health communications and interactions in order to combat misinformation exposure and help the public make informed decisions.

Outcomes and Implications

By reframing digital media exposure as a critical social determinant of health, the authors urge those in the public health field and exposure scientists to develop a way that monitors and addresses the risks that come with AI-driven communications. As online interactions are increasingly shaping health behaviors, it is essential to acknowledge both the potential benefits and risks of integrating AI technologies into health education and care delivery, since misinformation and harmful content can undermine patient outcomes, while accurate and personalized AI tools can enhance them. Ideally, the authors aim that the implementation of a surveillance infrastructure for digital health information will happen in the near term in order to better inform processes in patient care.
