Urology

Comprehensive Summary

Circumcision, or the surgical removal of the foreskin from the tip of the penis, is a common practice with both cultural and medical significance. However, a range of penile abnormalities (i.e. hypospadias) exist where circumcision is contraindicated and specialized care is required. Artificial intelligence (AI), then, has the potential to serve as an image-recognition diagnostic tool, where it can utilize deep learning models to aid in early detection and informed decision making through a mobile platform. Through the use of high-resolution penile images from ventral, dorsal, and lateral angles, this AI model incorporates real-time analysis and clinical feedback in the continued refinement process of identifying normal vs. abnormal penile anatomy. As a system primarily designed for preliminary screening in underserved areas, this AI model development is currently ongoing; specifically, recent integration into a mobile application has greatly facilitated safe circumcision decision making in resource-limited settings.

Outcomes and Implications

Incorporating AI into a mobile system for preliminary penile screening greatly increases early detection and informed decision making regarding circumcision eligibility. Not only saving time and resources, this tool has the potential to serve as an important resource for general practitioners and caregivers in underserved areas where access to quality medical services is scarce. With further development underway, this model of incorporating AI in the process of screening for penile abnormalities through a mobile app offers a promising tool to facilitate telemedicine and optimizing referral pathways.
