This study by Burmeister et al. evaluated discourse on Reddit, a pseudonymous online discussion forum, to evaluate the emotional and thematic landscape surrounding propofol. The researchers identified and analyzed 921 publicly available posts on the site mentioning propofol with a mixed-methods approach that included TextBlob and manual thematic coding. In addition, posts were categorized by the specific subforum they were posted in, the overall sentiment of the post, and the exact topic of discussion in the post. It was determined 50% of the posts were neutral, 30% were negative, and only 20% were positive. Negative posts were more commonly associated with patient-oriented subforums like r/colonoscopy, whereas more neutral or analytical posts were more frequently linked to provider-based subforums like r/anesthesiology. Furthermore, four thematic topics were identified: questions about clinical sedation and medications, provider professionalism and ethics, veterinary use and animal care, and finally, exam stress or career anxiety. Overall, this study characterized the range of sentiments shared publicly by individuals on a popular online forum regarding discussions about propofol.
Outcomes and Implications
In a constantly changing digital landscape, sentiment-aware patient tools and education remain critically important. This study’s analysis of discussions about propofol on Reddit reveals mostly negative discourse, which is likely related to prevailing patient anxiety about anesthesia. These findings serve to inform anesthesia providers about the emotional narratives surrounding sedation and how they can improve patient counseling and shared decision-making by navigating these sentiments with their patients.
