This paper, written by Chaitali Sinha et al., examines whether adjunct features such as AI tools, journaling and self management tools, in a digital mental app improve engagement. The researchers conducted a retrospective observational study using anonymized data from 1213 users of the Wysa app between February and July of 2022. Users who engaged with at least one adjunct app feature completed significantly more coaching sessions than those who did not. Additionally, feature users were three times more likely to complete their next session. The authors concluded that a holistic approach with multiple supportive elements is needed when designing mental health interventions to ensure better user satisfaction and overall effectiveness.
Outcomes and Implications
Mental health continues to affect more than 970 million people worldwide, with many lacking access to affordable care. Continuity of care becomes crucial in improving symptoms and overall health outcomes by ensuring patients have support outside of consultations from health professionals. Digital Mental Health Interactions (DMHI) increases access by providing low cost and convenient support without having to make appointments and travel. This study uses real world data from the Wysa app to evaluate whether integrating certain features can improve user engagement, allowing more people to benefit from these platforms.
