In the midst of the artificial intelligence (AI) revolution, Pistore et al. conducted a systematic review to assess the accuracy and efficacy of ChatGPT in answering questions about melanoma. Utilizing around twenty common melanoma-related questions asked to AI chatbots, twelve dermatologists specialized in skin cancer analyzed ChatGPT’s responses to evaluate accuracy. The results demonstrated that ChatGPT responded appropriately to questions 88.3% of the time, with some questions receiving higher marks than others. The responses of each dermatologist also varied, with some viewing responses more positively than others.
Outcomes and Implications
Overall, the study performed by Pistore et al. demonstrates that AI responses to medical questions do have a promising future and tend to be accurate most of the time. However, caution should be exercised when seeking advice from ChatGPT about medical matters, as its responses do not match the level of care provided by a clinical professional.
