Bridging Global Disparities in Drug Allergy Through AI-Assisted Training for Non-Specialists: Findings From the Multinational ADAPT-2 Course

This research, presented by Mak et al. examined the application of ADAPT-2, a drug allergy course, in Sri Lanka, China, Hong Kong and Australia as AI video localisations of the parent course ADAPT originally taught in English. Non-allergist physicians (n = 181) from Colombo, Guangzhou and Shenzhen, Hong Kong, and Perth were taught the Advances in Drug Allergy & Penicillin Testing-2 (ADAPT-2) course and assessed based on knowledge of drug allergies and confidence in treatment. Baseline scores trended low indicating approximately 54% and 48% for knowledge and confidence respectively while scores after the course increased to 72.5% drug allergy knowledge and 71.3% treatment confidence. Participants were highly satisfied with 98% rating the course as ‘somewhat clear’ given that AI has translated and lip-synched video from English to the native languages of these regions. Mak et. al acknowledged that the data was as a result of short-term knowledge compared to long-term retention assessments from the given information.
Outcomes and Implications
By providing accessible knowledge to emerging and advanced economies, awareness of drug allergies and its associated treatments may improve patient safety and competency of health care providers. AI localization has the potential to bridge educational gaps by allowing healthcare workers to benefit from this information and other areas of the medical field on a global scale, breaking the barriers of language or even geographical location. Structured, standardized education as supplemented by AI localization such as ADAPT-2 could be the next step towards a more equitable future.
