This paper looks at the effects of Aged Garlic Extract (AGE) against the unfortunate changes that happen in the brain during aging, such as proteomic alterations and cognitive decline. The researchers tested their hypothesis that Aged Garlic supplementation improves cognition and brain functioning by feeding 43-week-old mice (comparable to middle-aged humans) with a diet that was AGE-supplemented for a total of 40 weeks, compared to a control group that didn’t receive AGE. The mice then received a barrage of tests that studied behavior and proteomics with a little dose of AI power for data analysis. Findings revealed that the AGE supplement did in fact improve spatial-learning, cognition, and anxiety-like conditions from the big number of behavioral tests done on the mice while analysis of proteins (proteomics) showed more synapses being made (synaptogenesis improvements) and lower apoptosis 14-3-3 signaling with no major changes mathematically could be said about average food intake, body weight, mortality, or weird changes in general health between the 2 groups. The authors discussed, or rather concluded, that AGE-related supplementation does indeed improve age-related cognitive decline, anxiety-like behaviors, and modifies in a good way molecular pathways that cause neurodegeneration.

Outcomes and Implications

To start, this research should be considered critical because it relates to something common (aged garlic extract) used to prevent something as serious as age-related cognitive decline and neurodegenerative disease. The molecular pathways leading to neurodegenerative disease and cognitive decline are also being studied here, which is also important. Based on the findings, AGE could be clinically relevant to maintaining cognitive function and fighting anxiety in elderly patients, given as a common prescription medicine in medical clinics. While the study has built a good stable base (especially around the molecular pathways), there must be more research to be done to expand and get this translated to human research to flatten out any kinks and errors before actual real-world use.
