Dermatology

Comprehensive Summary

Punjabi et al evaluate how accurately an NHS-approved AI tool and teledermatologists can detect Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC), which is a rare and highly aggressive skin cancer. Across more than 124,000 patients with skin lesions seen between 2020 and 2024, only 12 patients with a total of 13 lesions were diagnosed with MCC. Six of these lesions met criteria for AI assessment, and the AI correctly identified them all as needed for urgent cancer referral. The other seven lesions were unable to be reviewed by AI due to their size formation but were accurately treated by teledermatologists. Overall, these findings suggest that both AI and teledermatology are highly sensitive in detecting MCC skin lesions.
