Comprehensive Summary

Netz et al. details a randomized control trial exploring the delivery of personalized exercise regimens generated using AI using a smartphone platform to determine whether the program would improve the balance, strength, and flexibility of older adults. This app would ensure that older adults get personalized care catered to their needs and capacity. This study incorporated three groups, which were a personalized exercise group, active control group, and passive control group. The accelerometer on the smartphone would assess static and dynamic balance, flexibility, and strength, and 239 participants completed the eight week program. After the program, all participants had increased balance, arm strength, and flexion, and there was no significant improvement with body strength. Some of these improvements were visible after four weeks. Overall, the study showed that the fitness application was successful with the program tasks of improving flexibility, strength, and balance, and this application provides opportunities for growth especially with older populations to potentially improve mobility and cognitive impairments.

Outcomes and Implications

This program using artificial intelligence paves the way to further online enhancements to treatments and progress plans for people, which would increase the access to personalized care. Because there may be privacy issues with tracking someone's movement and activity, this AI model would need to ensure that the information tracked would stay safe and could not be hacked. This program would greatly improve strength and flexibility, improving the quality of life of people by making it easier for them to perform activities in daily living. Overall, this device usage could also be less expensive for those that may need more constant care and personalized goals, making sure to constantly check up on individuals to make sure that the steps described in exercise plans are actually helping patients.
