Pediatrics

Comprehensive Summary

This study explores how using a generative artificial intelligence (AI) scribe can impact pediatric providers’ efficiency in managing electronic health record (EHR) documentation tasks and whether it reduces cognitive workload and job burnout. Researchers conducted a six-month pilot study at Akron Children’s Hospital, where 84 pediatric providers used a commercial AI digital scribe during outpatient visits. They evaluated changes in documentation time, mental task load, burnout, and caregiver satisfaction using EHR logs, provider surveys, and thematic analysis of providers’ written feedback. The digital scribe was used in 69.5% of total patient encounters, leading to a significant reduction in documentation time—an average of 2.8 minutes per note and about 1.5 hours saved per provider per week. Providers reported significant decreases in mental and temporal demands, as well as perceived effort for documentation tasks. Burnout rates also dropped from 54.9% to 33.3%, with 76.5% of providers stating that the tool improved their job satisfaction. This study illustrates that AI scribes can decrease not only the time but also the mental burden of documentation, which appears to be a significant factor in reducing provider burnout.

Outcomes and Implications

Burnout among pediatric providers is a serious concern and EHR-related documentation is frequently cited as a primary contributor. Addressing this burden can help sustain provider well-being and allow clinicians to continue delivering high-quality patient care. This research is clinically relevant as the AI scribe tool has already been adopted across pediatric outpatient settings and is being expanded to study its use in emergency and inpatient clinical environments.
