Comprehensive Summary

You et al. performed a study to determine the efficacy of high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) in analyzing the effects of tofacitinib on treating interstitial lung disease (ILD). ILD arises from the activity of anti-melanoma differentiation-associated gene 5 positive (anti MDA5+). Seventy participants with ILD either received tofacitinib or acted as a control, and the results of the treatment were analyzed by a deep learning method. Tofacitinib treatment was shown to extend patient life by around three years, and the number of skin lesions in the lung lessened significantly more than the control group. However, the patients who received tofacitinib demonstrated a higher risk of infection.

Outcomes and Implications

The study demonstrates the effectiveness of tofacitinib in treating ILD that results from anti-MDA5+ DM, though it does increase risk of infection. Furthermore, the HRCT analysis paired with a deep learning model proved effective in discovering the relationship between tofacitinib treatment and the regression of ILD symptoms.
