Public Health

Comprehensive Summary

This tutorial provides a guideline approach on how to design patient-facing health messages that are based on information provided by real patient feedback. Researchers used Self-Determination Theory (SDT) which has autonomy, competence, and relatedness as its core mission. SDT provides a framework used to build messages that promote nonpharmacological pain management strategies like mindfulness and cognitive behavioral theory. While working with the Veterans Health Administration, researchers collaborated with various patient groups made up of veterans and caregivers to create refined messages using the process of rapid prototyping and feedback models. This study highlights how common behavioral science principles can be integrated with a human focused design to make communication with patients more personable, clear, and beneficial. Integrating AI into these messages to allow not only innovation and efficiency but also the opportunity to ensure that technology is introduced to patient care in a way that makes patients feel safe and trusting of the systems.

Outcomes and Implications

This study is important because it gives clinicians and healthcare providers a guide on how to improve the quality and effectiveness of patient communication utilizing AI models. By using a mix of human design and theories that have been backed by evidence for years, this study allows for clinicians to improve care through more collaborative and empathetic models that put patient understanding at the root of communication. This ensures that with this model, patients from all different backgrounds can get personalized care that also is tailored to them in a way that improves adherence to treatment recommendations by clinicians. It also shows how patient feedback can be used in an effective way to ensure that the healthcare field remains focused on improving the patient experience in all aspects of care. Using AI as a tool also provided a safeguard against bias and misinformation by keeping the patient involved and standardizing the system involved in patient communication. Overall, this study also reinforces the idea that technology can be implemented into healthcare in a way that enhances it, instead of replacing human interaction. Technological advancements in healthcare can lead to a more supportive, engaging, and personalized approach to the healthcare system.
